Japanese Maritime Law Association was founded in 1901 with the goal of researching maritime law and contributing to its international unification. It was formally approved as a public-interest foundation by the Minister of Communications on March 18, 1940. Since its foundation, JMLA has been a member of the Comité Maritime International (CMI), and has consistently cooperated with international organizations including the CMI and other national maritime law associations.
